Salma Hashim Yusuf – Mass Communication Alumna
Shortlisted for CNN’s Voices from the South: Storytelling for Impact
“I am deeply honoured and excited to have been shortlisted for CNN’s Voices from the South: Storytelling for Impact, a prestigious global program by CNN Academy that amplifies the voices of early-career storytellers from the global south. Selected from thousands of applicants worldwide, this opportunity places me within a vibrant community of changemakers who are reshaping the narrative about our region.
My journey to this incredible milestone was profoundly shaped by my time at Nile University of Nigeria. The university’s commitment to experiential learning through career fairs and internship opportunities opened doors that allowed me to gain invaluable real-world exposure. The transformative masterclasses, such as the Film and Multimedia Masterclass organized in partnership with MultiChoice, expanded my creativity and broadened my understanding of visual storytelling in today’s digital landscape.
Additionally, the hands-on training I received from the Center for Journalism, Innovation and Development (CJID) equipped me with essential skills in investigative reporting and multimedia storytelling, grounding me in the fundamentals of impactful journalism.”
Dr. Adekunle Adeleke – HOD, Mechanical Engineering
Programme Technical Chair at AfricaTek 2025, ESPRIT Tunisia
“Serving as the Programme Technical Chair at AfricaTek 2025, hosted at ESPRIT in Tunisia, was an incredibly enriching and inspiring experience. This event epitomized true cross-border collaboration where diverse ideas converged, and innovation flourished. Witnessing firsthand how emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), is being harnessed across Africa to address local challenges reaffirmed my optimism for a resilient, future-ready continent.
During the conference, I had the privilege of presenting my research titled ‘Machine Learning-Based Prediction of Aluminium Metal Matrix Composite Properties Reinforced with Biomass Ash.’ This study demonstrates how AI can accurately predict the mechanical properties of composites based on oxide compositions found in biomass ash, offering a smarter, scalable alternative to traditional experimental methods.
AfricaTek, supported by Honoris United Universities, is setting a powerful precedent for higher education in Africa, and championing a collaborative, technology-forward approach deeply rooted in meaningful impact.”
Samuel Ogenekeno Oletu & Nguavese Catherine-Joan Avan – Political Science & International Relations Students
Erasmus+ Student Exchange Programme – University of Hradec Králové, Czech Republic
Oyinlola David-Suberu – Mechatronics Engineering Student (400L)
Winner, “Get Creative Competition: Plastic Awareness Campaign”
“My name is Oyinlola David-Suberu, and I am proud to be a Mechatronics Engineering student at Nile University with a deep passion for sustainability and creative problem-solving.
I have always believed in the power of transforming what others overlook into something meaningful and impactful. This mindset of constantly asking ‘how else can this be used?’, coupled with my dedication to environmental sustainability, inspired me to participate in the 2024-2025 ‘Get Creative Competition: Plastic Awareness Campaign’ organized by the French Embassy in Nigeria in partnership with Total Energies and NNPCL.
For my entry, I collected over 130 discarded bottle caps from around Nile University’s campus during peak hours. These are items often ignored and carelessly discarded. I transformed them into a functional, handmade plastic handbag that is both practical and visually appealing.
Winning this competition was humbling, and I hope my work challenges others to rethink their relationship with waste. Sustainability is not only achievable, but it can also be a source of creativity and beauty.”
Each of these stories is a powerful reminder that Africa’s future is already in motion — and that when education empowers individuals, the impact reaches far beyond the classroom.
Follow along as we continue celebrating world-class African talent across the Honoris network.
